Skinny's Ice Cream Machine

You borrowed the machine. Here's everything you need to make magic.

Stuck? Tap the Ask Skinny's button, bottom-right, and just ask.

▢️ Getting Started

  1. Plug in. Use a dedicated 110V 15A grounded outlet β€” plug straight into the wall if you can. Sharing the circuit or using a thin/long extension cord will trip the breaker.
  2. Reset. With the power switch (top-right toggle) set to Off, press the reset button in the top-left corner. Listen for a "click."
  3. Fill the chamber. Lift the lid, pull the air tube out of the hopper, and pour in your mix. Bubbles will rise where the tube was (~1 minute). When they stop, put the air tube back and point the dispenser paddle outward.
  4. Turn it on. Flip the switch to Auto, then quickly press and release the paddle to start the cycle. Keep a cup handy for any liquid.
  5. Wait 15–20 minutes. The freezing cycle runs on its own and shuts off automatically when the soft serve is ready. Timing depends on the outside air temperature β€” hotter air takes longer, cooler air freezes faster.
Extension cord? Match the gauge to the length: 14ga ≀ 25 ft Β· 12ga ≀ 50 ft Β· 10ga ≀ 100 ft. Never exceed 100 ft.
πŸ”Š Where to set it up: the machine is fairly loud β€” noisy in a small room, but fine in large or open spaces. Running it outside? Keep it in the shade; sun and heat slow down freezing.

🍨 Serving It Up

🍹 Recipes & Mixes

🍍 Dole Soft Serve Mix (dairy-free)

A crowd pleaser β€” and dairy-free, gluten-free, and vegan-friendly. Pineapple is the classic "Dole Whip," and the pineapple mix is available at CHEF'STORE.

11 fruit flavors:

You'll need: one 4.4 lb bag of Dole mix, water, a 5-gallon collapsible jug, and a whisk.

Skinny's sweet spot: the bag says 6.75 quarts (27 cups) of water, but 24 cups gives the best consistency in this machine.
  1. Add all the dry mix to the collapsible jug first.
  2. Pour in 8 cups of water and whisk until every clump is gone.
  3. Add the remaining 16 cups (24 total) and mix well.
  4. Refrigerate the mix until you're ready β€” cold mix freezes faster and firmer.
  5. Fill the hopper and run the machine as usual (Off β†’ reset β†’ fill β†’ Auto β†’ 15–20 min).

🍺 Root Beer Ice Cream

Tastes just like a root beer float or freeze β€” a guaranteed favorite.

You'll need: one 2.5-gallon bag of 7% milk fat vanilla soft serve (Farr Better) and one bottle of The Big H Root Beer Extract (local grocery stores, Hires Big H restaurants, or online).

  1. Take the lid off the 2.5-gallon bag of vanilla soft serve.
  2. Pour in one full bottle of Big H Root Beer Extract and mix well.
  3. Best the night before: mix it in and refrigerate overnight so the flavor develops.
  4. Fill the hopper and run the machine as usual (Off β†’ reset β†’ fill β†’ Auto β†’ 15–20 min).

🌴 Disney-Style Dole Whip Floats

Disney makes its famous floats by pairing a Dole Whip flavor with a chilled soda or juice. Recreate them with Dole Soft Serve (or plain vanilla) from this machine.

The float formula: fill a clear cup β…” with well-chilled soda/juice β†’ top with a serving of Dole soft serve β†’ add toppings β†’ serve right away with a spoon & straw. No specific flavor on hand? Pineapple or vanilla works for almost any of these.
⚠️ One flavor at a time: Skinny's makes a single flavor per batch β€” it can't do swirls or twists. The floats below all use one flavor. (A few Disney swirls that need two flavors are listed at the bottom for reference.)

🍍 Classic Pineapple Float β€” the original: pineapple juice + Pineapple Dole soft serve (or vanilla β€” pick one).

πŸŒ‹ I Lava You Float β€” Strawberry Fanta + Orange Dole soft serve, drizzled with red passion-fruit syrup (grenadine works), topped with popping candy added right before serving.

πŸ₯€ Soda Floats β€” chilled soda + Dole soft serve or vanilla: Root Beer (Barq's), Coca-Cola, Diet Coke, Sprite, Fanta Orange, Fanta Strawberry, or POWERADE Mountain Berry Blast.

🍍🍊 Pineapple Orange Soda Float β€” orange soda + Pineapple Dole soft serve.

🫐 Rafiki Wildberry & Orange Float β€” Fanta Orange + Orange Dole soft serve with mixed-berry (wildberry) syrup.

🍍 Tropical Pineapple β€” Pineapple Dole soft serve topped with watermelon, strawberry & coconut syrups.

🚫 Swirls β€” can't be made on this machine (they need two flavors at once). Listed for reference; make just one of the two flavors instead:
🍊 Orange Cream Swirl (orange + vanilla) Β· πŸ₯₯ Coconut Pineapple Cup (coconut + pineapple) Β· πŸ“ Strawberry Coconut Swirl Β· πŸ₯ Mango-Lime Swirl

Vanilla & chocolate in 2.5-gallon bags. Go to the office to order β€” they'll point you to the right door. Usually has cones, waffle bowls, and 5–6 flavors of Dole Soft Serve too.

No account? No problem β€” just tell them it's a "cash" purchase (you can still pay by credit card).

~$20.45 / 2.5-gal bag of 7% vanilla, with tax (as of 5/23/2026).

Toppings, cones, bowls & Dole Whip

CHEF'STORE (a.k.a. Chef Store)

370 Paxton Ave, Salt Lake City, UT 84101 Β· Map

Bigger variety of cups, cones, and bowls β€” better prices too. Carries Dole Whip.

Cups: foam cups are best (they keep soft serve cold). For big crowds, the Dart 4 oz squat foam cup matches the machine's serving size β€” sold in sleeves of 50 for about $2.49.

Cones: Joy Cone wafer "cake" cones in sizes #1, #10, #20, #40 β€” jacketed (individually wrapped, great for self-serve crowds) or non-jacketed (bulk, cheaper). Smaller number = smaller cone; #1 is smallest, #40 largest. #10–#20 is a great all-around party size.
